EVEN IF, for the unemployed, there was enough work to go to, the Government's infatuation with the work ethic is out of touch with the realities of work today: stress, exploitation and insecurity (Alan Watkins, Section 2, 29 March). It also fails to consider the value and meaning of the work we do - its effect on the environment, its socio-economic divisiveness and that far too much work (especially by the ruling management middle-classes) is purely in the monetary self-interest of those who do it. The massive transfer of money from education, health and the environment - the things that matter - to the pockets of entertainment, the city and marketing is bankrupting the world. Why aren't these issues being addressed by Frank Field's Green Paper?
