Sir: G. M. Watkins's complaint (Letters, 15 October) that we British seem to neglect children in favour of birds, is nowhere more evident than in the names of three of our major charitable bodies.

For it is the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals - but only the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Yours sincerely,

LEN CLARKE
