Sir: Tristan Garel-Jones (6 March) argues against republicanism on the assumption that a republic necessarily implies a president. Both a strong executive president and a ceremonial figurehead would, he suggests, be unsatisfactory. But why would we need a president at all? I have no difficulty in envisaging a republic headed by a prime minister.
