Letter: When the cure can kill

IF WE needed eye operations I'd far rather Peter Curran operated on my family and I than a surgeon who considers himself or herself not at risk ('Surgeon in HIV row breaks silence' and 'Trial by tabloid', 12 July).

Whatever their sexual habits, all members of the medical profession, including dentists and nurses, have been at varying degrees of risk because they have inevitably come into contact with blood from their patients.

If everyone regarded themselves as a possible transmitter (and receiver) of HIV, scrupulous care would be taken and the terrible disease would claim no more victims.
