Letter: Who really killed Hanratty?

Sir: How are we to adjust Hanratty's death certificate now ("Wrongly hanged: Hanratty is found innocent", 27 January)?

Unlawful Killing, or Death by Misadventure, perhaps? Was he killed in the Queen's name? Is she a murderess? Or in the name of the public? Are we a lynch mob? Was it judicial murder? Were the judge and jury personally guilty?

This is not game-playing. If there is any possibility of ever restoring the death penalty, the questions need answers. Just who will take responsibility for violence by "the state" against individuals?
