Sir: As a former chairman of the Arts Council (1977-82) working alongside Sir Roy Shaw as Secretary General, I am totally baffled by the various charges levelled against him by Michael Daley (letter, 24 March) insofar as I find them comprehensible. For example, to hold him responsible for alleged shortcomings in today's Arts Council, 12 years and three Secretaries- General after Sir Roy's retirement, seems to me bizarre in the extreme.
