Going for a tenor
WHAT a pity that Geoffrey Wheatcroft debased an otherwise interesting profile of Roberto Alagna ("Crisp new tenor", 4 June) by the inclusion of ill-informed remarks about the artistry of Luciano Pavarotti.
The cognoscenti of Covent Garden (whose loud Bertie Wooster bleatings mar one's entertainment) simply cannot bear the idea that the lower orders should have the opportunity to hear and appreciate a great operatic tenor. Wheatcroft's allusion to "arenas" and "big money" gives the game away.
