Government figures for 1988 show 50,000 vehicles a day passing through Salisbury, 40 per cent without stopping; not 6 per cent as you say in your article "Immortalised by Constable..." (23 February). This government report concludes that the bypass would reduce traffic by 85 per cent in the villages, not a fifth. In addition you say that the view of the cathedral would be lost - in fact it would be improved from the bypass. Two local surveys have shown 75 and 80 per cent of people in favour. Many oppo-nents do not live in Salisbury.
