LETTER : WHY PEOPLE DON'T WHISTLE

NEAL Ascherson asks why people no longer whistle or whisper ("What was it we won?", 7 May). People don't whistle because songwriters no longer write tunes that can be whistled. They write music that you listen to on a personal stereo; and there's no point in whispering to people who are deafening (or have already deafened) themselves with their own private rock concert.
