Bob Harrison asks what all the North Sea oil and gas revenue (pounds 150bn) has been spent on (Letters, 5 January). May I quote Sir Ronald Mason, the former chief scientific adviser at the Ministry of Defence, who said that the true cost of Trident submarines is pounds 50bn - pounds 1,000 for every man, woman and child in Britain.

The oil and gas are situated off Scotland. London gets the revenue, Scotland gets the bombs - and Britain fewer schools, hospitals, jobs and welfare rights.
