JOHN Gummer's welcome for plans to amend the European Birds Directive must be given a fair hearing (Letters, 10 April). The proposals should, if anything, help conservation by fixing dates according to agreed criteria for when hunting seasons must end. The criteria were agreed by scientists familiar with the different geographical regions of the EU and the ecological requirements of migratory bird conservation.
