Letter: Licence to kill
NICK HORNBY should not learn to drive on any account ('In fear of driving', 10 October). Since the Independent on Sunday has chosen to highlight the overuse of the car and its effects, it should be made clear that it is not just the inhabitants of North London who should be living in fear of every new car on our roads.
Motor cars kill. They also pollute our towns, our countryside and our air, and are
the greatest threat to the environment.
It is obvious that the Government prefers the suicidal growth of private car ownership to public transport, and actively encourages the use of the car.
It is therefore up to the individual to act for the future: tear up your driving licence. Throw your car keys away - and do it now.
