Letter: Turkish angle
The views published in response to your travel article on northern Cyprus are biased (Letters, 27 July).
Turkey intervened in 1974 to safeguard the Turkish Cypriot community following a Greek Junta-backed coup against the government. The intervention followed years of Greek Cypriot oppression of the Turkish Cypriot community who were, between 1963-74, ethnically cleansed from 97 per cent of the island. Turkish troops will remain to protect Turkish Cypriots until a solution is found that guarantees their human rights and security.
