From Dr A W. F. Erskine Sir: I am surprised that in the current debate about standards in public life, I have seen no mention of the Lynskey tribunal in 1948. In this, the hapless John Belcher, a junior minister in the Attlee government, was grilled mercilessly by Attorney-General Shawcross because he had accepted the gift of a crate of whisky from a businessman called Stanley. He had to resign, disgraced.

Yours faithfully, A. W. F. ERSKINE London, NW2
