From Mr John Davey Sir: It may be true that few children are having private lessons on electronic keyboard instruments ("Piano gives way to electronic keyboard", 25 January ), but it cannot be denied that they have become increasingly used in schools forthe purpose of introducing children to the world of music.

The recognition of this led Trinity College London to design and launch in 1994 a suite of graded examinations for the electronic keyboard similar to those already available for more traditional instruments, and the numbers of candidates are increasing healthily each year.

Yours faithfully, JOHN DAVEY Chief Executive Trinity College London London, W1
