UK weather: Frosty, white Christmas in store for some
Some higher areas could even see snow
Southern parts of the UK will see heavy cloud and scattered showers on Tuesday with temperatures remaining mild, around 13C.
Meanwhile the north looks set for sunshine and will feel much colder with daytime lows of 6C forecast.
Further outbreaks of rain will move across Southern England and South Wales through the afternoon. This will gradually head further north overnight and will grow heavier and more widespread through Wednesday.
Colder temperatures further north could mean that rain will turn to snow for parts of the Pennines, Peak District and Snowdonia.
A Met Office yellow weather warning of rain is in place for much of the south from 6am Wednesday to 6am Thursday.
Northerly winds will gradually push the rain away, bringing much colder temperatures to the south and leaving clear skies. This means Christmas morning is set to be frosty, dry and bright for most.
Met Office’s Aiden McGivern said: “Quite widely it’s looking like [Christmas morning] will be white with frost.” Temperatures for Christmas morning will range from -4C near Birmingham to 3C in northern Scotland.
Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland will see more cloud Christmas Day and less chance of frost than the rest of the country.
Clouds and some rain will move across northern parts of the UK in the afternoon. Given the low temperatures, this may fall as a few flakes of snow.
