Lee, Manchester: 'Lee is Manchester-born and bred. I met him on a sunny day outside the bus terminal in the city centre. He has been on the street for more years than he cares to remember. Winters can be tough on the homeless, he said – and 2008 was particularly harsh for Lee. Sleeping rough, he developed frostbite in his hands and feet. He subsequently spent three months in hospital and lost all his toes and some fingers to gangrene. When photographing Lee I tried to incorporate his story into the final image. Using the bright light, the shadows of fingers on his face represent dark 'ghosts' of the ones he lost.'
