THE Twentieth Century Society (latterly known as The Thirties Society) is to hold a three-day conference on the architecture and design of the Fifties. Speakers will include Robert Hewison on the Festival of Britain, Alan Powers on the architectural practice YRM and Andrew Saint of English Heritage on the London County Council's Architect's Department. There will also be tours of the Royal Festival Hall, Span housing - a form of suburban Modernism for the middle classes - and the Le Corbusier-inspired Alton Estate at Roehampton. 'Refashioning the Fifties' begins on 2 October; for details, telephone 071-387 3154.
