The director doesn't want the first film to be 'a fluke'

Avatar was a pretty big deal when it was released in 2009. Not only did it manage to become the highest grossing film of all time, it almost single-handedly introduced the world to 3D as a viable cinema experience.

James Cameron, as you may expect, is feeling the pressure a bit. The acclaimed director has spoken very little about the upcoming sequel trilogy (there are three films on the way by the way) but has finally updated the world on where he is at.

Speaking to EW, he revealed he is “doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” but that almost everything else is in place.

“That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set].”

With all the character development, scenery etc almost finished, you would think Cameron would be feeling a lot better about things.

“No,” the 61-year-old said. “Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

If the first Avatar was like Pocahontas, as long as Avatar 2 doesn’t follow the direct-to-video sequel it should all be fine.
