Disney has announced they will launch a subscription service next month in the UK, becoming the biggest media company yet to directly stream their own content online.

Unlike Netflix, DisneyLife will stream books and music alongside movies and TV shows, giving consumers a variety of content all within the Disney brand.

This means classic titles such as Snow White, Jungle Book, and Cinderella, along with Pixar’s entire catalogue and thousands of Disney Channel shows will all be available.

“This is the future, in many respects,” Disney’s chief executive, Bob Iger told Financial Times. “We’re seeing more and more opportunities to reach consumers directly and not through middlemen, and we’re seeing consumers wanting product in different ways.”

The Mouse also owns the rights to all Marvel Studio films and LucasFilm (Star Wars), but these will not feature on the service straight away. Iger added, however, that DisneyLife could expand to include these.

Excitingly, content will be available to download offline, so you and your children can enjoy singing along to Frozen when away from the internet.

Netflix currently streams a number of Disney films but it is unknown whether they will be removed or not.

DisneyLife will cost £9.99 a month, and content will be available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The service will not be available outside the UK, but plans to make it available in the US have not been ruled out.
