Over the weekend, Chris Rock - host of the 88th Academy Awards - posted a cryptic video to his Instagram feed hinting at a #blackout at the Oscars.

Speaking of his appointment as host, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs told The Hollywood Reporter you should expect the comedian to tackle the #OscarsSoWhite controversy head on.

"Well, we've always known he was gonna go there, right?” she said. "This is Chris. We know who he is.”

Rock reportedly changed his opening monologue to reflect the controversy which spawned because, for the second year in a row, not a single non-white actor was nominated for an award.

"He is a brilliant, brilliant, observant comedian and performer, and he is a brilliant host," she continued. "And yes, we want him to [go there].

"Way before this, our selection of Chris was to bring some edge and some fun and some funny —intelligent funny — to the telecast. So we know he's going to do that.”

Because of the controversy, a number of celebrities have vowed to boycott the ceremony, including Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee.
