Star Wars: Ewan McGregor wants to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for one (maybe two) spinoff films

'I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one'

It’s no secret; the Star Wars prequels were bad. At times, really bad. Who thought the line “I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere” was good dialogue?

There were, of course, some redeeming factors. Not many of them, but a few. One was casting Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Sir Alec Guinness in the original trilogy.

Speaking to the French magazine Premiere while promoting his directorial debut, an adaptation of Philip Roth’s American Pastoral, the actor was asked about potential Star Wars spin-offs.

“I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one,” he told the publication (via Den of Geek), adding he would like to portray the character on screen once more.

“It would be fun to film that story now I’m older,” he said. “I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them (laughs)!”

McGregor divulged that Disney had yet to approach him for any potential sequels/prequels, but said of the franchise's future: “I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!”

Premiere noted that McGregor took little pushing to talk about Star Wars although he finds it annoying how speaking about the sci-fi saga “it seems as though I’m begging for work!”

Meanwhile, the final trailer for Star Wars spinoff Rogue One has been revealed to the world, revealing more footage of Darth Vader.
