Folk festival of the week: Broadstairs Folk Week, various venues, Broadstairs
Saturday 11 August 2012
Getting into the swing of the English folk festival spirit with a torchlit procession tonight, the line-up at Charles Dickens' favourite resort features more than 100 pub gigs, and seven stages, from the seafront Pavilion to the Crampton Museum, plus song, dance and children's workshops.
Eddi Reader (Sun) and Oysterband (Tue) are among the headliners, while gems include what promises to be an entertaining talk and "informal" concert from O'Hooley and Tidow (Sun), whose album The Fragile sports a rack of fabulous songs. Carthy and Swarbrick (Mon & Tue) are another duo in concert and in conversation, while Monday features Whizz Jones, a founding figure in British folk, blues and rock, and the folk singer Lucy Ward, celebrating The Beatles. Broadstairs' instrumental genius Tim Edey (Tue & Wed), Chris Wood (Wed), Feast of Fiddles (Thur) and Megson (Fri) all help add up to a week of rich pickings.
