James Blunt has revealed that the story of how Ed Sheeran got that face scar last year was an entire fabrication.

Last November, it was reported that Sheeran had been rushed to hospital after Princess Beatrice sliced his face with a sword during a mock-knighting ceremony.

Blunt was said to have been the one being 'knighted' at a party thrown by the Princess at the Royal Lodge in Windsor. Reports suggested the sword cut Sheeran's cheek when she swung it back.

Now, singer Blunt has confirmed in an interview with ShortList that the whole story was made up.

“Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself,” Blunt stated, continuing: “We made a fancy story up; people fell for it. It was very embarrassing.

When pressed to ask how much of the story was fabricated, Blunt said firmly: “All of it.”

The initial (now slightly embarassing) source reports read: “The blade cut into his face and it was just a few inches from his right eye. A couple of the guests said it could have been worse and he could have been blinded in the eye, but Ed really played it down.”

It's been a good week for Sheeran; the British singer's latest album ÷ [Divide] has been released to record-breaking figures and has already amassed well over a billion views on YouTube. You can read our review of the record here.
