Spice Girls reunion tour: Remembering one of their best 'Girl Power' moments

Girl group weren't happy at the suggestion they should show cleavage in an advert where they were dressed as school girls

It's official: the Spice Girls reunion is happening. While many fans will be disappointed that Victoria Beckham (AKA Posh Spice) has opted out of taking part in the string of massive stadium tours, they will still see to get Mel B, Geri Horner (formerly Halliwell), Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm perform live.

In 2016, as the early rumours of a reunion began to surface, fans re-discovered a video clip of Mel B and Geri Halliwell scolding a male producer for suggesting they show cleavage and midriff, in an advert where they were dressed as schoolgirls.

The edited video showed a behind-the-scenes clip of the girl group at the peak of their fame in 1997, as they shot an advert for Polaroid.

"Who was it?" Mel B (Scary Spice) is seen demanding, marching towards two men on the set. "Was it you? Why did you ask that, to have our cleavage showing and our midriffs showing?"

"It's every man's fantasy," the producer responds.

"You're a chauvinistic pig," Halliwell tells him. "That is such an easy cop-out, that really is." She also questioned what type of example the group would be setting to their young, mostly female fanbase by following through with the producer's request.

Mel C later appears on camera uttering their famous slogan: "Girl power!"

In the end, the Spice Girls prevailed and appeared in the advert without their cleavage or midriff on show.

The Spice Girls reunion tour – their first series of live shows in a decade – will feature six performances in London, Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh and Bristol.

"We hope everyone can join us for one big Spice Girls party!" a statement from the group said. Tickets go on sale at 10.30am on Saturday.
