Album: Fuck Buttons, Slow Focus (ATP Recordings)

Fuck Buttons are the band whose name no one dare speak but whose music, thanks to Danny Boyle's Olympics opening ceremony, everyone has now heard.

And, thanks to an impressive spot on the BBC's red button coverage of Glastonbury, a few more can now put faces to the name (even if they still won't say it out loud). Now's a good time, then, to be tuning in to the Bristolian duo, because Benjamin John Power and Andrew Hung's third album (the first that they've self-produced) is a huge step up from anything they've ever done before.

The four-year hiatus between Tarot Sport and Slow Focus hasn't gone to waste. Its seven lengthy electronic instrumental tracks all consist of big, dirty synth chords that last two bars before they change, over tribal Banshees/PiL analogue drumming. They all sound like some monstrous engine from a James (Top Gear) May documentary reaching full throttle.

You can wait around in vain for something to happen, but it never does: there's no progression or narrative, it's immersive rather than engrossing. Slow Focus is an album to steep yourself in.
