Album: Gruff Rhys, Atheist Xmas EP (Ovni / Turnstile)
This EP from the chief Super Furry Animal and owner of the loveliest voice in Britain is misleadingly-named: none of its tracks sets out to disprove the existence of God, as such.
"Depressing Christmas" might be closer to the truth. Opener "Post Apocalypse Christmas" has lines such as "We lick our wounds to kill the hunger"; "At the End of the Line" is a conversation between elderly parents and a son who doesn't have time to see them, and "Slashed Wrists at Christmas", is a rock'n'roll ballad in the style of Mud's "Lonely This Christmas".
