Album: Josh Arcoleo, Beginnings (Edition)
Impressive debut from new tenor sax contender Arcoleo, with Ivo Neame on piano, Callum Gourlay on bass and James Maddren on drums.
Arcoleo's sound is grainy, with an almost Joe Henderson-like pliancy to his playing – as shown to great effect on the opener "Dean Rd". At 23, he's understandably less distinctive as a writer and the all-original material eventually succumbs to an inevitable progress from slow one, to medium-tempo one to fast one. But the band cooks.
