Black City is the fifth album in seven years from electronic pop maestro Matthew Dear (under his own name at least – he also aliases as Jabberjaw, Audion and False).

It continues his trick of applying left-field lyrics and an indie sensibility to techno-house musical methods. This time around there's a muffled, nocturnal feel, pitched somewhere between a white-boy Tricky and Chromeo on downers, and just when you're drifting off, an ear-catching line such as "I am a monkey, frozen in my monkey tree" jolts you awake.
