Meshell Ndegeocello's tribute to Nina Simone recasts the High Priestess of Soul's repertoire in the bassist's more subtle, reflective manner.
"Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" finds her breathy voice haunted by hanging mellotron, while the familiar rousing roll of "Feeling Good" here becomes a more quietly contemplative affair, refocusing attention on the lyric. The more languid, erotic performances are balanced by ones on which Deantoni Parks' drums dictate the mood through their rattling, martial bustle.
