Album: Norman Watt-Roy, Faith & Grace (Cadiz)
Anyone who's seen Watt-Roy play bass with the Blockheads, before or after Ian Dury, will know what a star he is.
Strange, then, that this belated debut album produced by Gilad Atzmon (who also plays), isn't quite sure what to do with him. A superfluous "Billericay Dickie" gives way to the crackling jazz-funk grooves that Watt-Roy and Chaz Jankel were so adept at, but not enough of them. A charming "Me, My Bass and I'" and a tender "My Foolish Heart", are highlights.
