Album: Paddy Milner, The Curious Case Of... (Paddy Milner Music)

Piano whizz Paddy Milner can probably turn his hand to most modes, but on The Curious Case Of..., he sticks mostly to the area where blues meets jazz, with a clear leaning in the direction of New Orleans.

He romps through different R&B styles with abandon: "Going To See My Baby" opens proceedings with a rollicking Crescent City blues, complete with marching-band brass; for "You've Got Me" he essays a Rosco Gordon-esque shuffle groove; and "Call On Me" offers his own brisk, skittish boogie take on the classic Diddleybeat. But it's his dazzling, super-fast version of Dave Brubeck's classic "Unsquare Dance" that most impresses – the composer himself has marvelled at Milner's interpretation. This stylistic tour is rounded off with versions of Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" and Rihanna's "Disturbia".
