Album: Paul Curreri, California (Hi-Ya / Tin Angel)
Curreri accounts for a lot of the musical weight behind Devon Sproule.
He is something of a quiet genius, having a gift for skewed, elliptical or downright dutch arrangements of the familiar tropes of American music. His sixth album is an entirely solo record – one of those occasions when the artist records himself playing all the instruments, only allowing the talented wife to plug in cursorily. He is so quietly, persistently musical that he might be the JJ Cale or Jesse Winchester of our time. But he isn't.
