Star vocalist Gregory Porter’s new album isn’t out until September, but there’s five great tracks co-written and sung by him on this funky project, headed by his regular drummer, Zak Najor.

It also features the legendary guitarist Melvin Sparks, who has died since the recording. Saxophonist Karl Denson echoes the thick, soupy sound of Eddie Harris, while Porter is given a bolder soul-role than his own albums allow. As jam-type sessions go, this is a superior product.
