Album: Richard Fairhurst's Triptych, Amusia (Babel)

Yet another super-confident UK piano trio.

What makes Triptych work well is the interplay of Fairhurst's rhythmically complex but airy-sounding piano playing with the unusually musical drumming of American-in-London Chris Vatalaro and the solid, grounding role of Danish bassist Jasper Hoiby.

All the tunes are Fairhurst originals, and while they betray a heavy jazz debt (to Monk on the title track), and his own solo style favours the right hand rather than the left, Amusia fairly fizzes with ideas.
