With this album of her settings of unfinished Sandy Denny lyrics, Thea Gilmore cements her position as young custodian of the 1960s folkie flame that was established with her album-length cover of John Wesley Harding earlier this year. And it could hardly be in better hands: her melodies and arrangements for Denny's songs about homesickness, stage fright, unrequited love and parenthood are so aptly wrought it's hard to see how the late folk icon could have bested them. Whether bringing an anthemic lullaby warmth to the inner turmoil of "Goodnight" and "Long Time Gone", updating the period folk-rock style for "Sailor" and "London", or exposing the enigmatic beauty of "Frozen Time" with judicious strings and piano, her choices here are invariably correct, illuminating material that can stand comparison with most Denny classics.
