Album: Various artists, Late Night Tales – The Decade Box (Late Night Tales)
Sunday 27 November 2011
It can't be an accident that 10 years ago, amid fascination for the iPod's shuffle-function, the compilation album became the hippest format going. Rare groove met downtempo chill-out in new boutique comps ("Back to Mine", "Another Late Night") where DJs and bands selected auteurist soundtracks for late-night listening.
Now, as "Late Night Tales" celebrates its longevity with a limited-edition collection of all 27 albums, you have to say the series stands up well. Compilers from dance music (Fila Brazilia and Groove Armada, pictured) soon broadened to include pop (Turin Brakes, Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol) but really, it doesn't matter: the aesthetic prevails whoever's choosing the tunes.
There's Nick Drake and Fairport Convention all over the place, along with Sixties pop, soul and jazz – and it's as a real treasure trove that this collection works best.
