When Elektra's Jac Holzman first commissioned future Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye to compile Nuggets, back at the start of the Seventies, the intention was simply to collect overlooked Sixties gems worthy of rescue from oblivion.
But what Kaye eventually came up with was a remarkable accumulation of Original Artyfacts from The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968, inspired moments of mad genius from such as The Standells, The Seeds, Chocolate Watch Band, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and Electric Prunes, retrospectively denominated "garage punk" or "garage psychedelia", culled from the period between The Beatles' arrival in America and the more grandiose delusions of the counter-culture.
