IoS album review: Fanga/Maalem Abdallah Guinea, Fangnawa Experience (Strut)
French Afro collective Fanga and Morocco’s Abdullah Guinea have superimposed gnawa roots music on to 1970s funk so successfully as to make these two disparate forms seem as if they belong together.
The dry rasp of the three-stringed guimbri nuzzles up to the clipped funky guitar and synth bass, while the mournful, soulful overarching vocals bring everything back again to the streets of Marrakech. An atmospheric yet danceable debut.
