Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy lands massive Netflix deal

The director will exclusively develop content for the streaming service

Following the success of Stranger Things, producer and director Shawn Levy has signed a huge deal with Netflix.

The deal — which reportedly lasts four years and cost an eight-figure number — will see Levy develop TV projects exclusively for the streaming service.

“Shawn and 21 Laps [Levy’s production company] are courageous and adept storytellers who lean into risk both narratively and by nurturing great young talent,” Cindy Holland, VP of original content for Netflix, said.

“They have an admirable track record for telling ambitious stories that have incredible heart and which resonate with audiences all over the world.”

Levy marks yet another high-profile showrunner who has signed a deal with Netflix, Grey's Anatomy and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes and Orange is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan both having deals with them.

“I don’t know any other company that would have taken a chance on a show about kids and inter-dimensional monsters, created by young unknown twin brothers and produced by a movie director’s production company,” Levy said, referring to Stranger Things.

“Netflix did, and they bet big, and it’s been truly thrilling to take this wild ride with such exceptional partners. My aspiration for 21 Laps has always been to create content that is eclectic, bold, humanist and surprising. As such, Netflix is the perfect home for us and our collaborators.”

Before working with Netflix, Levy was best known for directing family films such as Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther, and Night at the Museum.

The news of the Netflix deal comes just days after a third season of Stranger Things. Levy has directed four episodes of the show so far.
