One-third of world’s food is wasted

A third of the world’s food is wasted, according to a damning report from the World Bank. It states that wealthy companies are throwing away too much, and storage facilities in developing countries are inadequate. It also claims that the average household throws away £660 worth of food each year. MORE

Conservative MPs are putting pressure on Environment Secretary Owen Paterson to do more to protect homes vulnerable to flooding. It is claimed that eight out of 10 of the areas most at risk have Conservative MPs representing their constituency. MORE

Protesters demand release of ‘El Chapo’

Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Culiacan, Mexico, demanding the release of drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Police officers took several people into custody and used tear gas after bottles were being thrown. MORE

Migration figures jump by 60,000

The latest net migration figures show a jump of around 58,000, dashing David Cameron’s hopes to reduce the number to the “tens of thousands” by 2015. The annual net figure now stands at 212,000 for the year to September 2013, according to the ONS figures. MORE

30 dead, 50 injured as bike blows up

At least 31 people were killed and 51 wounded when a motorcycle wired with explosives was detonated in Baghdad. It was in a Shia neighbourhood. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but many are blaming Sunni insurgents who often use car bombs when they attack.

Captain returns to Concordia wreckage

The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, went back on board the ship yesterday for the first time since it sank more than two years ago, killing 32 people. Schettino faces manslaughter charges. MORE

Nasa discovers four habitable planets

Nasa has announced 715 newly discovered planets outside the Solar System. The Kepler Telescope picked out the worlds, pushing the number of discovered planets to 1,700. Four planets contain “habitable zones”, where it is not too hot nor too cold for liquid water. MORE

GCHQ ‘spied on Yahoo! webcams’

British spy agency GCHQ allegedly intercepted millions of webcam images of Yahoo! users between 2008 and 2010, whether they were an intelligence target or not. The report comes from documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden. MORE

Nanny ‘can help kids who see ghosts’

A woman in Florida is claiming to be the only psychic nanny who can help children who see ghosts. The nanny has been contacted by several parents who claim their sons and daughters have a sixth sense. She says she coaches families on how to interact with supernatural.

Pregnant woman completes marathon

A woman in China ran a marathon, despite being eight months pregnant. The 28-year-old woman participated in the competition at Beijing Olympic Park and believes that running the marathon will help her to deliver the baby more easily. The woman is expected to give birth next month.

A man walks into a bar with a tiger...

A man in Illinois is being charged with disorderly conduct after taking a tiger into a bar. John Basile, 57, took the tiger from his own animal rescue shelter and casually walked into the building. Basile’s website says his ranch is federally licensed and educates the community about wildlife.

Gamblers told to set their own limits

Gamblers will be able to set limits on the amount of time and money they spend on slot machines under new rules. The Association of British Bookmakers is attempting to tackle “problem gambling” by setting alerts when a player has spent £250, or been playing for more than 30 minutes.

Three rare lion cubs born in zoo

Three Asiatic lion cubs are making their first appearance at a zoo in Besancon, France. Fears for the two female and one male cubs’ survival delayed the zoo from announcing their birth in December. There are only 300 of the endangered breed in the world today.
