V&A's sell-out Christian Dior exhibition extended for seven weeks due to huge demand

The exhibition will now run until Sunday 1 September 2019

The V&A Museum has extended the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition for an additional seven weeks due to popular demand.

A total of 121,566 people have visited the exhibition to date after it sold out of all pre-bookable tickets just 19 days after it opened on 2 February 2019.

On Tuesday, the V&A announced on Twitter that the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, originally scheduled to end on 14 July 2019, will now run until Sunday 1 September 2019, with additional tickets available now through the museum's website.

Due to the extended run, the museum expects the exhibition will equal or surpass its most-visited show, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, which saw 493,043 people attend during its 21-week run in 2015.

However, you’re going to need to be quick if you want to get your hands on a ticket.

Throughout the extended run, the V&A has said it will release a limited number of exhibition tickets on the 15th of each month for the month ahead.

Tickets will also be available to purchase daily at 10.00am from the V&A’s Grand Entrance on a first-come, first-served basis, while V&A members can attend the exhibition for free with no need to book.

Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, said of the extended run: “We knew that Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams would be popular, but we have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal visitor response to-date.

“I would like to thank our visitors who have gone to such great lengths to see this extraordinary exhibition so far.

“I am delighted that we can extend the run, ensuring that as many people as possible have the chance to see it before it closes.”

From 1947 to the present day, the exhibition traces the history and impact of the French fashion designer and the six artistic directors who have succeeded him.

Based on the major exhibition Christian Dior: Couturier du Rêve, organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratif in Paris in 2017, the reimagined version for the V&A boasts more than 60 per cent of the objects previously unique to the Paris exhibition, and a brand-new section exploring the designer’s fascination with British culture.

Exhibits include dresses made for Princess Margaret on her 21st birthday, ballerina Margot Fonteyn and Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence.

The exhibition showcases more than 200 rare haute couture garments

Also on display are more than 200 rare Haute Couture garments shown alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions.
