The weather outside is frightful and yes the fire is so delightful – and, quite frankly, that ain't always the best news for your skin. The icy winds outside and the warm gusts of central heating inside contrive to dry sensitive skin as if it were a festive turkey.

What to do? Simple: moisturise, moisturise, moisturise – then do it a bit more. And not only will it ensure you look young in the long run, it will also help keep the signs of your month-long hangover at bay.

Anti-Age Global Revitalizer by Sisley

£165, sisley-paris.com

This is a moisturiser, anti-razor-burn formula and anti-ageing cream, which explains why it is so pricey. It uses lots of plant extracts, too, so it is better for you and the environment.

RéVive Moisturizing Renewal Cream Suprême

£125, harrods.com

A little New Year miracle in a pot. It uses a tri-partite mix of RES, Glycolic acid and skin softening moisturisers to bring tired, dry skin back to life. Pop it on when you go to bed and wake up with skin as soft as a baby's bottom.

Oil-Free Daily Moisturizer by Tom Ford

£75, tomford.com

Lightweight, quick-to-absorb, non-shiny, Tom Ford's hydrating and conditioning moisturiser ticks all the right boxes. It leaves the face feeling toned, glowing and happy.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream

£24, kiehls.co.uk

Kiehl's 'torture-tested' this 24-hour hydrator by sending the explorer Doug Stoup off on a jolly to the North Pole with a pot. His verdict? "My skin feels healthier and hydrated, the whole day."

GO24.7 Moisturiser

£13.95, selfridges.com

This may not be the best thing if your moisturising regime runs only to a single application. But it's a useful thing to have in your bag if you're on a long country walk and don't mind topping up as you go.
