The beautiful, boundary-pushing work of design duo Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff is somewhat divisive. The pair’s fondness for the off-key and the outsider has seen their label, Meadham Kirchhoff, become synonymous with creations that are intricate, elaborate and downright befuddling to more conservative followers of fashion.
They’re certainly one of the most exciting forces in London fashion. The craft that goes into their lace and latex pieces verges on couture. As such, their creations are inevitably available only to the most dedicated fashion lovers and those with understanding bank managers.
To their credit, the designers have sought out affordable projects that are more accessible to the young, creative and credit-free fans of their work. A collection for a high-street retailer will be announced soon, but for those who can’t wait, the – somewhat surprising – first port of call should be Amazon.
The online store has partnered with Meadham Kirchhoff for a second year as part of its ever-improving fashion offering. To follow up last year’s successful sweatshirt collection, this season the designers have created a collection of printed silk scarves that reference previous collections. And there’s nothing wispy about these designs, which measure over a metre squared and are pleasingly heavyweight.
“The design ‘Drawings’ is a visual archive of Edward’s sketches from the ‘Cosmology of Women’ autumn 2011 show,” explains the duo, “and ‘Pearl’ is an ornate design of baroque gold detailing and drop pearls that we featured in spring/summer 13.”
Amazon’s Jessica Brown says: “We’ve tried to create something which is affordable and will have wide appeal.”
Indeed, the designs are so beautiful that they’re sure to attract new fans, young and old, to the brand.
