This dry graves-style comes from Dourthe, one of Bordeaux's pioneers of the modern, attractive dry white. It is a characterful, fresh, grapefruity blend of two-thirds semillon and a third sauvignon blanc. A deft touch of oak adds complexity to the juicy fruit flavours and crisp acidity. Ideal for a firm white fish or spaghetti alla vongole.

2000 Boschendal Lanoy Cabernet Merlot £6.99, Tesco

I used to think Boschendal was boring. But punching well above its weight, this seductive Bordeaux blend is a perfumed Cape red whose intense cassis fruitiness is overlaid with a veneer of sweet cedar and vanilla oak spice and smooth tannins. Would suit new season's game.

Sunday

2000 Estancia Pinnacles Proprietor's Grown Pinot Noir £7.99, reduced from £9.99 until 9 Nov, Safeway

This youthful red from the cool, California coastal region of Monterey combines strawberry fruit aromas of pinot noir with a seductive opulence of fruit that's balanced by oak spice and firm, dry tannins on the aftertaste. Uncork for slow-cooked lamb shanks with Puy lentils or braised lamb and beans.

Any day

2001 La Rocca Bianco £2.99, reduced from £3.99 to 9 Nov, Safeway

If it's good enough for the Italian buyer to serve at her wedding, this Puglian dry white is good enough for me. Aromatic qualities of sauvignon add freshness and zip to the ripe, peachy qualities of the pinot bianco to create an appealing glugger. There's a similar deal on its red stablemate, 2000 La Rocca Rosso.
