Sparkling

Tesco Cava Reserva NV, Spain

There's a lot of ho-hum cava about but this reserva of the species from Jaume Serra is worth the extra £2 you pay over the basic cava brut; a classic Catalonian blend, both savoury and dry.

£6.99, Tesco

2011 Workhorse Sparkling Chenin Blanc, Ken Forrester, South Africa

Having made dry and sweet wines from old vine chenin blanc, Ken Forrester has now successfully turned his hand to sparkling wine, with a full-flavoured fizz with a refreshing sherbet lemon-like zest.

£9.99, Marks & Spencer

Pongrácz Brut, South Africa

The Krug-like bottle is a feature of this blend of the champagne grapes chardonnay and pinot noir, but behind the peach and apple fruit quality of one of South Africa's most reliable sparkling wines lies a complex fizz.

£13.99, Morrisons

Jansz Tasmania Premium Non Vintage Rosé, Australia

A regional sparkling trophy winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards three years in succession, this 'méthode tasmanoise' fizz delivers a mouthwateringly delicate mousse of raspberry flavours.

£16.25 - £19.99, Selfridges

2009 Wyfold Vineyard Sparkling Wine, England

From a chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier vineyard, this complex fizz with its toasty flavours triumphed at this year's Judgment of Parsons Green ahead of 77 other English sparkling wines.

£24.99, Laithwaites

Waitrose Blanc de Blancs NV Champagne, France

Consistently one of the best-value all-chardonnay champagnes on the market, with rich mousse and lime-creamy dry zestiness, it's one to keep up your sleeve for the second half of July when the price is reduced to a tidy £19.99.

£24.99, Waitrose

Rosé

2012 Simply Garnacha Rosé, Spain

If you've tried the red, you'll already know that Bodegas Borsão in Spain's Campo de Borja is a byword for value. If you haven't, try this refreshingly raspberryish Aragón pink.

£4.59, Tesco

2011 Viña Albali Rosé, Spain

Where the Spanish rosado from Bodegas Borsão is made from pure garnacha, this deepish pink number is all about tempranillo, and you can see the difference in the cherry and strawberry juiciness.

£5.99- £6.29, Morrisons, Tesco

2012 Réserve de la Saurine Rosé, France

From the Laudun Chusclan cooperative in the southern Rhône, this pale salmon-pink rosé is a full-bodied and thirst-quenching mouthful of summer-pudding fruitiness with an elegantly dry finish.

£6.99, Marks & Spencer

2012 Château Barthès, Bandol Rosé, France

Could there be anything more quintessentially Provençal than a Bandol rosé? Not if this perfumed fresh bronze pink is anything to go by.

£11.99, buy 2 = £9.99, Majestic

2012 Les Caillottes Sancerre Rosé, France

Fragrantly fresh with a lively berry fruit character, Sancerre rosé is made from a pinot noir grape which lends delicate flavour to the wine whose stylish vinosity and dry finish make for a terrific bottle for summer dining.

£10.99, Sainsbury's

2011 Rogers and Rufus Barossa Valley Grenache Rosé, Australia

An ideal al fresco or picnic wine; behind the attractive cherry-pink blush there's a refreshing spritz and appetizing cranberry and raspberry flavours.

£13.25, Flagship Wines (0172786 5309)
