Boas Vinhas Tinto 2009

From the Dão region, this smooth, rich red owes much of its elegant character to the port grape varieties Touriga Nacional and Tinto Roriz dominant in the blend. An excellent example of South Africa's best-known indigenous grape from a winery, Fairhills, committed to Fairtrade principles. Medium-bodied, packed with crunchy berry, plum and coffee flavours, this has a good, fresh acidity that would work well with barbecued chicken or pork, particularly if in a peri-peri or harissa marinade. £6.98, Asda

Bargain basement

Bushland Vines Barossa Valley Shiraz 2010

One of the best bargains around, from a budget supermarket whose wine range constantly surprises, and perfect for almost any barbecued red meats. Typically big, robust New World Shiraz fruit and chocolate flavours, balanced with restraint on the palate and a lovely, velvety mouthfeel. Could be twice the price elsewhere. £4.99, Aldi
