Sunday lunch

Reynella Basket-Pressed Shiraz 2008

Australian Shiraz does not have to be an in-your-face wine, if, as here, sufficient time is spent in cask and bottle for the grape to calm down and develop. This is elegant, structured and comparatively subtle for a Shiraz, with lots of typical black fruit, chocolate and tobacco flavours and a nice spicy underpinning from the 18 months spent in French and American oak casks. Excellent with rare roast beef. £15.99, Waitrose, ocado.com

Weekday supper

Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG 2010

And not all Italian whites have to be light and inconsequential. This lovely, medium-bodied white is made from the Cortese grape, which grows best around Gavi in the Ligurian hills, not far from the coast in northern Italy. Refreshing and zesty, but with some serious apricot, melon and citrus flavours and a nice lingering finish. Drunk in nearby Genoa to accompany the local seafood, which seems a very sensible idea. £9.49, M&S

Bargain basement

Yali Wetland Merlot Rosé 2010

June is the time of year when a regular supply of ice-cold rosé should be on hand to accompany spicy, garlicky fish dishes of all kinds, and this Chilean bottle is an ideal everyday wine, achieving a good balance between crisp freshness and red fruit flavours. The wine is named after the wetland area close to the Viña Ventisquero winery, which contributes to global wetland conservation. £5.59 (until 18 July if you buy two bottles as part of a mixed purchase of six; normally £6.99. Or £4.99 each if you buy two bottles between 19 July and 29 August), majestic.co.uk
