Sunday lunch

Senorio De Sotillo Ribera Del Duero 2006

Absolutely top-quality modern Spanish wine-making is on display in this stunning and very satisfying red made from Tempranillo grapes harvested high in the Ribera del Duero, then aged in oak for 15 months. Rich, dark and silky, this is brimming with brambly fruit flavours, underpinned with vanilla, woodsmoke and tar. Exceptionally good with roast leg of lamb or rib of beef for Easter Day. £15.80, jascots.co.uk

Midweek meal

Domaine La Croix Gratiot Roussanne IGP Pays D'oc 2011

It is worth buying some really top-notch white fish such as a halibut steak or shellfish to partner this remarkably good-value white from the Languedoc, but made with one of the staple Rhône grapes. Concentrated and complex, there are touches of honey, almond and apricots on the palate, with some spicy notes, yet it is bone-dry, with a mineral, clean finish. £9.50, nickollsandperks.co.uk; £8.99 (minimum order six bottles), invinitywines.co.uk

Bargain basement

Ostalon Domaine L'Ostal Cazes 2008

Comparing well with many other more expensive wines, this is a brilliant bargain from a team comprising the owner of a serious Bordeaux château and a wine-maker from one of the Duoro's top estates, working in La Livinière, probably the finest area of the Minervois. A typical blend of Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvèdre, it is naturally spicy and packed with black fruits and the herbs of the southern French hillsides. Excellent with all types of Mediterranean foods, but particularly vegetable tians. £7.99, Co-op stores
