The crisp delights of autumn are not lost on off-road cyclists. This hardy and durable bunch revel in the challenges the lower temperatures offer when, as Oscar Wilde noted, all at once, summer collapses into fall.

While the loquacious playwright’s thoughts on cycling went largely unrecorded, he would doubtless have been in accord with ultra-cool Japanese cycling apparel brand PEdAL ED, who in launching its inaugural set of dedicated garments for off-road riding exclaim that the post-summer months are when the real fun starts.

New cyclewear collection

“The joy of riding free in the woods, on trails and on gravel paths,” it states. “The joy of climbing solo, without cars and motorcycles on the road, on your favourite mountains. The joy of feeling warm and protected while outside it's freezing, and your breath is hanging in the air.”

Such sentiments form the premise of its Jary All-Road Collection, a robustly minimal and pleasingly stylish array of clothing that is designed squarely for the intrepid souls who like to look good and feel protected while furiously pedalling their bikes across challenging terrain.

High-performance cyclewear

Comprised of two merino jerseys (long and short sleeved), shorts, boxer pad and a three-layer jacket, the collection combines both of PEdAL ED founder Hideto Suzuki’s guiding principles – balance and harmony.

Explaining his design concepts, Suzuki, a fashion designer who began his love affair with cycling as a way of alleviating the stresses and strains of daily life in Tokyo, says he begins with a variety of ideas that are then distilled into the essence of the product he’s conceiving.

Suzuki then works with natural colours – a subtle nod to his Japanese heritage – and adds the essential high-performance qualities the clothing demands.

“Combining all these components creates simple, functional and unique PEdAL ED products,” he explains.

Streetwear range

Having been seduced by cycling’s multi-faceted charms, Suzuki founded PEdAL ED in 2007.

His background in fashion had combined both heritage and technical materials, so when it came to designing resilient and stylish cycling apparel he was in his element.

Suzuki's streetwear range quickly positioned PEdAL ED among other inspirational cycling brands, while his technical garments have been put to the test at two of the world’s ultimate endurance cycling events – the 2,500-mile Transcontinental Race and the 1,000-mile Silk Road Mountain Race.

As such, Suzuki’s belief that “the aesthetics and functionality of cycling apparel can greatly increase the pleasure of riding” is no empty boast.

Fortitude, fearlessness and fashion: PEdAL ED has the lot. This is where the real fun starts indeed.
